Almost 2,400 years ago, a man in Athens taught without ever giving a lecture. Socrates did not tell people what to think. He asked them questions, one after another, until they discovered the idea themselves. His students left convinced they had worked it out on their own, because they had.
That approach has a name now, the Socratic method, and it turns out to be one of the most durable ideas in the history of learning. Not because it is old, but because it matches how understanding actually forms.
What it actually is
The Socratic method is not a quiz, and it is not a teacher being difficult. It is a chain of questions, where each one moves you a single step closer to seeing something for yourself.
The person asking usually already knows the answer. That is not the point. The point is that when you reach a conclusion through your own reasoning, it becomes yours in a way a told answer never does. You can rebuild it later, because you know how you got there.
Why it works
There is a simple reason questions beat answers when you are trying to learn something: you remember what you figure out far better than what you are handed.
Being told the solution feels efficient. You read it, you nod, it makes sense. Then a week later, in the exam, it is gone, because understanding something and generating it are two different skills, and only one of them was practised. A good question forces the second one. It makes you retrieve, connect, and commit, which is exactly the kind of effort learning sticks to.
This is why the click matters: the moment you work something out yourself, it lands, and it stays. A good tutor's real job is not to hand you that moment, but to ask the one question that gets you to it, so the reaching feels less like being stuck and more like figuring it out.
What it looks like
Say a student is stuck on why 1/2 + 1/3 is not 2/5.
A tutor giving the answer would say: "You need a common denominator, it is 5/6." Correct, and forgotten by Friday. A Socratic tutor asks instead:
"If you cut a cake in half and I cut mine in thirds, are our slices the same size?"
"So can we just count them together as fifths?"
"What size of slice could both of ours be measured in?"
Three questions later the student says "sixths" and works out 5/6 themselves. Nobody told them. That is the whole trick.
"But I could just ask an AI for the answer"
You could, and for plenty of things that is exactly the right move. General-purpose assistants like ChatGPT are built to give you a direct, complete answer as fast as possible. When you need a fact, a draft, or a summary, that speed is a feature.
Learning is the one case where it can quietly work against you. An answer you can copy is an answer you can hand in without understanding, and by the next test it is usually gone. Asking the question instead flips that: you still get there, and this time what you get is yours to keep.
The two are not enemies. One is built to finish the task for you. The other is built so that next time, you can finish it yourself.
How to use it on yourself
You do not need a tutor in the room to think Socratically. When you are stuck:
- Before reaching for the solution, ask yourself the next smallest question. Not "what is the answer" but "what is the one thing I would need to know to take a single step?"
- Explain your reasoning out loud, as if to someone else. The gaps show up the moment you have to say them.
- When you do look something up, cover it and try to rebuild it from memory. If you cannot, you have found exactly what to study.
